Project Balance Update: Main Suite Color Scheme, Furniture, and Design Vision

Updated: Sep 25, 2024

I’m excited to share the latest progress on the Main Suite, where the goal is to create a bold, sophisticated, yet relaxing atmosphere tailored to a client’s refined taste. One of the key design elements I’m focusing on is the strategic use of straight lines, which will significantly impact the room’s overall look and feel.

The Power of Straight Lines in Design

Straight lines are central to enhancing the room’s atmosphere, and here’s how they will work their magic:

  1. Creating a Sense of Order and Structure: Straight lines bring a structured, intentional feel to the room, which sets a tone of calm and clarity.

  2. Visually Expanding the Space: Well-placed lines can make the room feel larger and more open, drawing the eye across the space.

  3. Enhancing Modern and Minimalist Styles: Clean, sharp lines accentuate the modern, minimalist elements of the design, contributing to a sleek, streamlined aesthetic.

  4. Guiding the Eye and Creating Flow: These lines naturally direct attention and create a smooth visual flow throughout the space.

  5. Timeless and Sophisticated Look: Straight lines offer a classic elegance that enhances the longevity of the design.

  6. Creating Contrast and Balance: Mixing vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines balances different elements and creates depth and contrast.

  7. Maximizing Functionality: Incorporating straight lines ensures that each piece of furniture is both functional and contributes to the room’s harmony.

Bed Selection

The centerpiece of the room is the bed, and I wanted to select a piece that reflects both style and sustainability. After researching options, I chose a bed made of Mango wood, which offers numerous advantages:

  1. Sustainability: Eco-friendly with a low environmental impact, making it a responsible material choice.

  2. Durability: Mango wood is hard, strong, and resistant to water and decay, ensuring longevity.

  3. Unique Aesthetics: Its beautiful grain and natural color variations bring warmth and character to the space.

  4. Affordability: A cost-effective hardwood option that doesn’t compromise on quality.

  5. Health Benefits: Low allergen potential and hypoallergenic properties, with natural finish options.

  6. Versatility: Works well with various design styles and is easy to maintain.

  7. Lightweight: Easier to move than other hardwoods, yet still incredibly strong.

Originally, the client had their heart set on the Arhaus Bodhi Canopy Storage Bed in a black finish, but the $4,500 price tag exceeded the budget. Fortunately, we found a fantastic alternative—the Oakleigh Canopy Bed from Pottery Barn for $2,500. While it doesn’t come with built-in storage or a black finish, the quality remains exceptional. To achieve the desired look, I plan to paint the bed black. Additionally, I selected black Cayman 27" Nightstands from Pottery Barn to complement the overall design. Here is what the client wanted versus what the client purchased:

Other Design Elements

To enhance the space, I’m incorporating custom and vintage elements. A DIY project involves creating a custom corner mirror (that doubles as wallart) using 12x12 mirror tiles, while other vintage wall art, a metal plant stand, and lighting fixtures from Pier One, World Market, and Hobby Lobby add an eclectic, personal touch.

Here’s what’s still in the works:

  • Bed linens

  • Industrial-style ceiling fan

  • Additional lighting

  • A reading chair

  • Live plants and more wall art to round out the design

Textiles and Rugs

I’ve chosen a black and white 100% wool rug (10x7) from Rugs.com to go under the bed. A second rug for the reading chair area is still under consideration.

Bed Rug Challenges

Though I received the rug before the bed was installed, I was focused on other tasks during the setup and missed the chance to rotate the rug to its intended position. The bed, weighing 300 pounds (without the mattress), will need to be partially disassembled to move the rug. Since the bed is such a substantial piece, repositioning the rug will be one of the last adjustments I make in this space. For now, I’ll work with the awkward rug placement until I’m ready to tackle this task later on.

Window Coverings

In keeping with the minimalist style, I opted for top-down cellular blackout shades from Blinds.com instead of traditional curtains. These shades provide both privacy and a clean, modern look with the ability to filter in natural light.

Color Scheme

The color palette for the Main Suite was carefully curated to achieve a calming yet bold atmosphere:

  • Light Soft Pink for the walls, providing a subtle, serene backdrop.

  • Black Furniture to create bold contrast and sophistication.

  • Concrete Gray as a ceiling accent for a modern touch.

  • White Bamboo Flooring for a light, airy feel that expands the space.

Baseline Layout

Here’s a sneak peek of the current layout. Although there’s still much to do, I’m excited about how the space is shaping up.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Main Suite continues its transformation!
